faqs:
- Dress Warm and in layers, since most races start early in the morning you will want to be warm and remove layers as the day warms up. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!
- A good pair of binoculars is a great idea. It is sometimes diffacult to tell what crews are coming down on the water and you want to be cheering for the right team!
- Race schedules are usually posted by email or on the website the night before, however due to constant changes this may not happen. The boosters will post the schedule and line ups at the crew tent the morning of the race.
- Boosters will organize food for the day, usually breakfast, lunch and plenty of snacks and drinks to keep the athletes energized and happy, always plenty for the parents as well. Volunteer for this job at least once a season - it is great way to meet everyone!
- It is a long day be prepared, bring a chair. It is a lot of fun and you as the parents make great friends too! You will be sad to miss a race after you attend just one.
- Cheer, cheer loud!
What makes a good rower?
Dedication, strength, hard work and ability to adapt and grow as an athlete. Height is always a plus but a shorter rower can make up for inches with strength.
What is an ERG?
An Ergometer is an indoor rowing machine. Check out the concept 2 web site. Ergometers do an excellent job of measuring a rower’s total fitness and power. Why do erg scores not determine lineups? There is a common saying in rowing: “Ergs don’t float.” Ergs can’t measure how well a rower’s hands and back follow with the rest of the team. They can’t measure how someone’s technical errors get magnified into problems with the boat’s balance and check. It doesn’t matter how powerful you are if you can’t translate it to boat speed. By the same token, smaller and less powerful rowers who help the set and swing of the boat frequently win seat races.
What do you bring to practice?
You should arrive to practice in dressed in layers, the weather on the water can be different than at your home. You can always peel them off. Long sleeve t-shirt, t-shirt, spandex shorts, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat or visor and water bottle. Don’t be late!
NO BAGGY SHORTS, shorts other then spandex can get caught in the slides of the boat.
Does my child need to be a member of US Rowing?
